Course Description

This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

Public space Sign&Graffiti-LI

No matter at what time in a day, I always see people holding coffee cups walking on street.
Some times they just put cups on top of something the spot just make us feel that place need something. But even just a coffee cup it will make different look and changes.

Vertical Structure
Public space not every sign at the spot will stay there for a long time.
No matter it is a temporary structure or a construction structure. There's commercial sign as poster for entire space. As a vertical structure it has the similar height as a person. So it will the most powerful place could let people see it. Also as certain repeats, it will make the strong feeling.

At 13th street University Place This looks like a mail box between pizza and a cupcake store.
Has all 'names' signature of spray painted.

Followed the same direction could see similar graffiti style. As walking along the area could see how people moving around.

Those graffiti arts on the ground level especially when everyone walking with their phones in hands. Those arts make sense only certain point of view can be seen.

Ground level have so many different arrows that looks have meanings with materials, traffic, sitting area.
It has meaning for some people when they make the change of the concrete.

From "Creative Time: The Book?"

The video project on the building facades make the huge attention to surface.
And during the some festive like Christmas eve or New York. Audiences from city will stand in front of the area and look at it. The entire environment makes the space have a street art.
