Course Description

This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

Curative Public Narrative #2
By: Kwang Min Ko

Narrative #1: Self

The Highline is intersection between the busy city and Hudson River. It is brilliant idea using the old railways and transforming in to park for families and friends to escape from busy city environment. The upper level park Highline gives refreshing spaces with great view of New York City. The secret space in NYC for people who are tired of chaotic city environment, the places will be quiet and relaxed.

Narrative #2: Highline and its Environment

The environment of Highline is isolated from the busy New York City; it is located on top of

the city, on old railways. This creates the distance for people in the park for them to think they are

finally far away from all the problems and loud noises of the city. For once people, who wants their

own relaxing space and escape from all the problems for brief time, Highline Park is highly

recommended to visit. The most interesting design of the Highline is the design of the chairs it

resembles the subway rail. The chairs and desks are well blend with the rail that is still left in the

park. The environment creates nostalgia feeling of arriving in subway.
