Course Description

This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

highline

For NYC, I see the highline as one of the representation of the culture. It is an enjoyable and relaxing way to get to know the city better for both visitors and residents. There are many boutiques, restaurants, galleries, schools, apartments, and offices around the park. The diversity in this location brings the high line different users who enter the park at different time with different purpose. Some employees just stroll there and sitting on the bunch for rest or for snack, visitors may go for sight seeing and taking pictures, residents usually go with their kids or little babies in the baby stroller. The visitors use High Line for sight seeing. Since the high line is connected to all of Chelsea, people could walk from the very bottom of the Chelsea and see everything until to the top. Since its right near to the Hudson River, people come to see the sunset and see the rivers view.

For myself, the highline is a communicating tool between the surroundings and me. The high line is made out of the old rails; some people enjoy looking at the train tracks too. The High line has lots of nature’s aspects high trees and lots of bushes that people could forget that they are in the middle of the city. As people walk through they could see the city right away and see the whole city and see the stunning architecture of the New York City. Not seeing the whole building, since the High Line is very close to the buildings, people can even see the detail parts of the buildings. Some small retardants are built on it so that people could have a meal while watching the beautiful view of the High Line. They offer interesting photo shooting places such as the glass street view and cute looking dolls. Moreover, the High Line looks very different depending on the four seasons that attracts people to come every season and feel the different but beauty of each season.
