Course Description
This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

#2. I think this project is tremendously successful in achieving its goals. It is super clear in its presentation. I understand what the intent of the project is and how they would actually realize it. They have created a real company. When I visit the website and look through their presentation, there is little doubt in my mind that this could actually be a real thing. It would be great if this organization actually existed.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the major issues that I foresee in actualizing this project is funding. It is a very expensive project, and I would imagine it would be extremely difficult to fully fund this project. I would expect that it would need to be scaled down in some way. Since a big part of the project's proposed art installations rely on projections, I don't foresee a lot of city regulations that would be violated. I would expect it to be far more difficult to create a physical installation of some sort. So I think that this is a strong aspect of this project.
Your project is clear and concise in it's intention and truly insightful in it's content. I find it incredibly interesting that you as an organization are representing the voices of artists and communities that otherwise would not be heard. Many find the gentrification of neighborhoods, especially those in Brooklyn to be something of a a double edged sword and the aesthetics of communities such as this need to have an outlet for communication. I think you are starting a very powerful and dynamic dialogue amongst residents.
ReplyDeleteI think that the project is incredibly clear and interest. I think it was interesting that you decided to tackle a project that those in Brooklyn really want and need. I know that should the project actually come to fruition, you would have an enormous amount of pushback from builders and in terms of funding.

ReplyDeleteI think this project really have successful archive their goals in the project. They have worked on their research around what they want at the very beginning. They know what they want and from that plan they start to search the artists. I feel they really understand how to curating a project in public space that’s why I think they’re presentation is clear.

They could document all the process of the project and then make a book or website and keep looking more artists who may interesting in the process and doing something different in different project types.
