Course Description

This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

Project Report " HI " ---Kun Yang

Project Report " HI "
By:kun yang
Proposal

Our overall mission is reflecting the fear of people interacting in this day and age through multiple performance pieces held throughout the city. We live in a time where people are connected 24/7 online via smartphones, computers, and tablets. The connection of a simple face-to-face conversation is rapidly disappearing. Social anxiety over simple conversations is something that many people face. This is a new problem. The four of us will attempt to tackle this problem via four different performance art pieces. The performances will be meant to encourage the public to step away from their smartphones, interact with the art, and most importantly, each other.

Project Intro
I think the whole world start to be, even people stay in the public space, they still keep their personal space on purpose. in America, a decrease in community, in the pubic-ness life. Therefore i want to use my project to break this invisible space. When we face a stranger, we will feel shy, fear, or other emotions which make us be afraid to start the conversation.
When I were young and in the playground, i were never afraid that i cannot find friends in the playground. Because childishness breaks the space of any children in the playground. During the time flies, the childishness still in our heart. So I think when we back to the "playground" in this environment, it can help us to people to share their story in public.

Questions on the ball :
Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
Would you like to be famous? In what way?
Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?
What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?
When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?
Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.
For what in your life do you feel most grateful?
If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
Take four minutes and tell your partner your life story in as much detail as possible.
If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?
If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?
Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?
What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?
What do you value most in a friendship?
What is your most treasured memory?
What is your most terrible memory?
If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?
What does friendship mean to you?
What roles do love and affection play in your life?
Alternate sharing 5 things you consider a positive characteristic of your partner.
How close and warm is your family? Do you feel your childhood was happier than most other people’s?
How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?
Make three true “we” statements each. For instance, “We are both in this room feeling …”
Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share …”
If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for him or her to know.
Tell your partner what you like about them; be very honest this time, saying things that you might not say to someone you’ve just met.
Share with your partner an embarrassing moment in your life.
When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
Tell your partner something that you like about them already.
What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?

Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?

  1. Experimenting with the concept of adults revert back to a childlike state as a way of breaking down societal barriers is very interesting and could be pursued even further. This could be an outlet for many people and take on the form of workshops or public therapy. You've come up with a plethora of very dynamic and personal questions that could again, lead to something that takes on a larger scale. I would love to see this process documented in the way of public art or a short film and brought to many different neighborhoods to see if peoples reactions/responses are drastically different.

  3. #2. I don't think that this project has been fully realized based on what the opening paragraph says. It seems like a few different ideas combined under one heading. I'm actually still not sure what this project is exactly about, so its hard to even comment on what could be improved.
#3. I think what would really help make this project more understandable is just a more organized description of what exactly it does and what it's goals are. One particular aspect that is confusing is the project description jumps from talking about people not communication in public to building communities to talking about a public pool filled with balls. So I think just more organization in the description of this project would help get a better understanding of what it is trying to accomplish.

  4. • The idea of a playground is nice and I think it will be successful for the purpose of this project, because I think it attracts people and also it is part of a lot of people’s childhood.
    • I think that this project could be better if the project introduction was more developed. It seems a little bit loose.

Kun have thought a lot of things after he did the first draft of this project. We were in a same team and have similar goals to the projects we curating separate. From the begging everything is just about Before I Die, but since his idea is to get people involved the research he did is local also global. From that prospect it is a successful growing for this project.

He’s trying to push the site of this project to Parsons at the moment. I think it will be interesting if he could separate the idea into different lifestyles in different group. It is hard if we wants to ask all those question to the world but since he already chose the site then the audiences will change because of the location. It will change several questions too.
