Course Description

This course will investigate the ways in which artists have presented narratives in the public realm and the organizations that have made the presentation of those works central to their curatorial practices over the last 40 years. Focusing on recent works presented in New York’s public spaces by Creative Time, The Public Art Fund, the Percent for Art Program, Arts for Transit and other non-profits organizations, this course will look at what it meant to tell stories and open discourses that challenged or interrogated widely-held value systems, the events and the politics of their time. In addition to the specifics of current and other key works and projects, we will discuss the conditions that governed the development of public performance, temporary and permanent installations, the ways in which those works were influenced by public approval processes and governmental agencies, media coverage and community response. Each student’s final project will be an on-line proposal for an exhibition that conveys a “narrative“ developed in the context of this course, referencing other relevant works .

  1. The question you ask is a personal and profound one. It also accredits the diversity of the community through street art in an admirable way. You link the diversity of your neighborhood with the theme of social anxiety very well. The memories, phrases and texts unlocks language barriers between residents that would otherwise be paralyzed to communicate with “the other” and so I feel that humanizing every different ethnicity in a variety of different languages is a great way to start dissecting this concept and develop a relationship between strangers.

  2. I remember this project mostly from the presentations last week. I think that is project has a really strong, realistic concept that is totally achievable. I think Dominique did a great job in identifying a real-life problem and opportunity for design intervention within her community. After her presentation, it seems clear to me that she did a lot of research and has a pretty good understanding of how this project could actually be realized. I think it is successful in accomplishing what she wanted it to.

This project could definitely be stronger if it was just presented in a clearer fashion. The only reason I feel I understand this project is because I hear Dominique present it. But if this presentation was given to someone outside of this class, or if someone just read through this document, they would have a very difficult time understanding the scope and goals of the project. So I think that the concept is very strong but has a weak presentation. My comments feel trivial to me, but things like more pictures, less text, some sort of story board, or more visual information overall would give us as her audience an easier time in understanding her project.

  3. • I think this project is successful in the media used. The idea of writing your memories about your country of birth or any other place that is part of you will make people feel more connected to their roots.
    • Maybe what I would suggest is to in some way connect more the idea of social anxiety because as I get how they connect to their roots I am not sure how much they will connect to other people.

The project have a specific choice of site and locations. The research of the site is very successful.
The curator really understand the location and the neighbors around the area. The project doesn’t need a lot of money to spend on the project which also related to the site history. Everything about this project being circled into the site makes the project successful.

The audience of this project will be the neighbours in the area in Brooklyn. If the project itself really got connection to the neighbourhood then the engaging part of the project won’t be a problem because this is a language wall which means communicate. There’s one thing I wish to know about the project. The language wall cannot connect to the neighbor or if this is not the best way to communicate then will there be another way to do this?
